This written analysis is an extension of our 5Qs. Via a theoretical perspective—Marxist, Organizational, Pragmatic, Rhetorical, Cultural, Psychoanalytic, Feminist, Queer, Reception, or Erotic—students will analyze one text from a stand-up comic working on TV from 1990-present. Students will engage with ALL of these perspectives throughout the term, but they will select only one for their formal written analysis. Since one of our class goals is to learn to write tightly, the analysis should span roughly 600 words.
This paper should be suitable for publication to Columbia College’s Watercooler Journal. Students should keep this in mind as they construct their arguments, search for sources, locate examples, and format their papers. In short, know that your written work may be read, recycled, commented on, and judged by many other people. This is similar to what will happen when you, one day, release your creative work over the airwaves.
