What Is a Video Essay?
Writing about Film and TV
This assignment is for graduate students only.
This term, Spike Lee and Quentin Tarantino have films in theaters,
The Hateful Eight
is also now available for purchase on Amazon, iTunes, Xbox, Playstation, and Google Play).
Graduate students should watch ONE of these films and situate it amongst our class material and discussions. For example, they might ask
Where would you place this film in Lee's or Tarantino's oeuvre? Does it reinforce or challenge his auteur status (e.g., director as DJ, independent auteur, sellebrity auteur)?
How is violence used here? What's its relation to race?
How is sex represented?
In what genre(s) is Lee or Tarantino working? Is he revising the genre(s)?
How are women represented? Is this in line with the director's usual representation(s)?
What is the film saying about white masculinity? Black masculinity?
Is abjection a major focus?
Please make sure you have a thesis as this is not a review or a thinkpiece (!!).
About 1,500 words should do it. Due anytime before Mar 7.
